Jack-o’-Lantern

I had a fun day today carving a Jack-o’-lantern with my mommy and daddy. First my daddy cut a circle around the top of the pumpkin. Then he let me scoop out all the seeds and the gooey, slimey insides. Oh, it felt so funny. I squished the seeds around with my fingers. When I finished scooping the insides, Mommy asked me to separate all the seeds, so we could roast them for a snack. Yum Yum! We counted the pumpkins seeds. There were more than 100 seeds in my pumpkin! You can have lots of fun counting pumpkin seeds. Mommy had me put them into groups of ten to make my counting easier. Next, I drew a happy face on my pumpkin with a marker. Daddy helped me cut out the pumpkin with special pumpkin cutters. You have to always have your mommy or daddy helping you because the tools are sharp and can be dangerous! I am not allowed to play with candles. So on Halloween, we are going to put in a little flashlight to light the Jack-o’-Lantern.

Did you know that a long long time ago, on Hallow’s eve, people in Ireland carved turnips, potatoes, beets, rutabagas, and goards and put candles in them to scare away bad spirits. When some Irish came to America to live, they brought this tradition with them. But they found that pumpkins were even better to carve into Jack o’ Lanterns. What do you think of my happy Jack o’ Lantern?
